Chinese medicine for diabetes?

Chinese investigators tested the clinical efficacy of Kaizin Capsule (KXC), a Chinese patent medicine, in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) complicated with abnormal lipidaemia. Seventy-two inpatients with diabetes mellitus were randomly divided in two groups. Both groups were treated with conventional hypoglycaemics; one group received orally administered KXC in addition. Changes in blood lipid levels were monitored before and after treatment. The KXC combined with hypoglycaemics group lowered their blood lipid by 14% and triglyceride by 36% after treatment. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was raised by 11% and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) lowered by 24%. Compared with the group receiving hypoglycaemics only, the difference was significant.
