Relation between needle thickness and acupuncture sensation

Objective

To investigate the relation between needle thickness and acupuncture sensation.

Materials and methods

Subjects were 30 healthy Korean volunteers, with informed consent. Three different thickness needles were used: 0.20 mm, 0.25 mm and 0.30 mm in diameter. Length was consistently 30 mm.

The study was a randomised controlled trial with subject, assessor and therapist blinding.

Subjects received acupuncture with one of the three sizes randomly allocated, and then they filled in the sensation form. After 7 days and 14 days, the same procedures were repeated to allow the subjects to experience the remaining needle size.
