Plant-derived oestrogen wins FDA approval

US regulators have approved Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc’s second plant-derived female hormone replacement tablet, an alternative to animal-derived products, which have been linked to serious health risks. A Barr spokeswoman said that there is, however, no proof the company’s new tablets are safer than oestrogens made from animal proteins. The US Food and Drug Administration cleared the product for treatment of moderate to severe symptoms associated with menopause.
