Wasting money efficiently

An efficiency unit of the British NHS wasted £70 000 by repeatedly cancelling conferences at an exclusive hotel. Four payments of between £14 000 and £19 000 each were made to cancel conference dates during 2003. The total amount of the cancellation charges would have paid the annual salaries of four newly qualified nurses. The purpose of the cancelled conferences was for health officials to discuss ways of saving money.
