Acupuncture

Acupuncture fails to increase pregnancy rates

US researchers examined the impact of acupuncture on the embryology characteristics of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) patients, i.e. are there changes in the numbers of eggs generated, embryos fertilised, embryos transferred or remaining embryos for freezing. One hundred and seventy-eight IVF cycles were reviewed in a retrospective fashion. Patients’ demographics, years infertile, age of male partners, sperm parameters, day 3 follicle stimulating hormone, pulsatility indices, weight, body-mass index, infertility diagnoses and IVF treatment protocols were statistically similar for both the controls (C) and acupuncture treatment groups. All patients that completed an IVF cycle (retrieval and transfer) were included. There were 97 in the C group (no acupuncture) and 81 in the acupuncture group. Pregnancy rates for the acupuncture group were statistically similar to the C group (acupuncture 49.5 vs. 46.3%). There were no statistically significant differences between the controls and acupuncture-treated groups.
